Open Thread

Even though I have jacksquat for traffic, I'm cracking open a Tuesday open thread, just for sh!ts and giggles. Maybe if I drop a few invites elsewhere, someone will drive by.

What's on your mind?

A couple things are on my mind, and I hope to have posts later this week. One topic is the currently circulating theme that questions the worth of a college education in the face of the mushrooming cost burden. I'd like to hear what folks think about that. Especially if they've got something more than a yes or no answer to "is it worth it?"

I'd also like to do something on education reform in general, both in public schools and college.

And as always, chat about music, beer, movies, and so on is always welcome. How was your Labor Day weekend?

  1. Since you seem to be on a path to becoming as much of an attention whore craving traffic as the rest of us - here is some advice that works, that I have occasionally tried to follow, but generally don't - to the detriment of my own traffic.

Also I would add one more rule. Don't subscribe to a political philosophy that demands you change teams almost every election cycle. It pisses off your old following and requires periodic resets of whatever meager following you have accumulated.

    I'll

  2. Thanks for the tip. All worth thinking about.

At this point, I am not particularly interested in getting a million hits. But I'd be very happy to get a small set of semi-regular visitors for the sake of having interesting and thoughtful discussions. My brand may not have legs. But I don't see any reason for the nature of my brand to be determined by the search for legs.

FWIW, I didn't plump your dividist thesis over at donklephant for any reason other than that I thought it had merit worth mentioning.

I think there's a small but real possibility that a sensible, somewhat moderate independent political platform can emerge around a small set of issues in time to make a useful difference in the 2012 election.

For that to happen, conditional supporters of it need to accept the idea that the end goal isn't a permanent dislocation of two-party dominance. Instead, the end goal is just to make a useful corrective difference in our path over the short term.

I don't see any way to get high traffic without the threads becoming overwhelmed by "your side is way worse than our side" people. So I won't go out of my way to attract such folks, even though I'll be happy to take them on, and to roast them at higg flame for sport if I get cranky enough.

  3. Good Labor Day weekend, good opening to bird season (yum), out of town mostly last week and this coming week.

Advice for flame-roasting: Slow roast can be amusing, but blowtorch also has its role ... ;-)

  4. Howdy, stranger.

Still a grudging admirer of my Twins? This year has been great. Target Field is perfect; the opposite of the Metrodome in every way possible.

  5. Thanks for dropping by, guys.

Very impressed with the Twins, especially with Morneau out on top of losing your closer, and not missing a beat, Liriano has bounced back really well, which is yet more proof that elbow surgery for a pitcher is usually much less to worry about than shoulder surgery. My physical therapist confirmed this, saying that tommy job surgery can actually make an elbow sounder. By contrast, there's very little fixing that can be done for shoulders, they can't be fully restored. Much better to get to them early, strengthen and balance them, and try to prevent damage. The Red Sox seem to have been in the forefront of taking shoulder strengthening and monitoring a high priority.

Busy installing another bamboo floor. Augh, my knees.
